Why I Don't Buy Canned Coconut Milk Anymore

Vanilla Coconut Cream Candy
Coconut milk is a non-dairy-eater's dream.  Even those of us who can tolerate dairy still enjoy it's creamy, sweet flavor.  The thing is: coconut milk comes in cans.  Even if you buy it in BPA-free cans, some metal can still leach into the milk and it has to be processed to be stable enough in the can.  So what do I use instead of coconut milk now?  Unrefined Coconut milk!  In concentrated form.  Actually, it's coconut cream concentrate, or coconut butter.

How is coconut butter turned into coconut milk?  Simply stir one teaspoon into a glass of water and viola!  If you are looking for a new, healthy non-dairy creamer, stir a spoonful of this into a mug of coffee or tea.  It will change your life.  What else can you do with coconut butter?  Find amazing recipes like no-bake quick lemon coconut candy, coconut ice cream, and better than candy nut crunchies, found at the bottom of this link.

This new method of making my coconut milk saves so much space in my pantry and fridge.  Since coconut butter is shelf-stable, it takes up no fridge space like dairy products.  And because it's concentrated, I can make 192 cups of coconut milk out of one, one-quart jar of coconut butter!  This is an amazing solution for my teeny tiny lil kitchen.  This is a massive savings as well!  A can of coconut milk is $1.98.  Making a glass of coconut milk with coconut butter ends up costing 20 cents per cup!

If your jar is shipped with the oil liquified at the top like mine was, the easiest way to get it ready to use is to dump all the jars contents in a blender.  Blend on high for about ten seconds, and pour it back into the jar.  It's then ready to use!  While you have it out and some of it in the blender, why not make a batch of one of the many recipes listed at the bottom of this link?

What do you like to make with coconut milk/cream/butter?  I'd love more ideas to try out and plug in to my weekly menu plans.

I'm sharing this at Monday Mania, Real Food Wednesday, Simple Lives Thursday, Pennywise Platter.

  1. This is brilliant! I ordered a jar of coconut butter with my last Azure order, and I haven't known what to do with it. Now I know! Thank you.

  2. Hmmm but at $30 to ship several sets to where I live its a better deal to wait for a free shipping coupon and just buy the 32 oz for $1.50 more.

  3. Thanks for sharing! I have never tried coconut concentrate before but use coconut oil for anything and often buy coconut milk in bpa free cans. this is way better and cheaper!

  4. Oh, for sure! My shipping was only $10. You might want to see if they can ship to you from a closer location. I had a huge shipping fee from them once and emailed them about it. They cut the shipping in half by having it shipped from a closer distribution location.

  5. That's a fabulous idea! I usually buy organic coconut milk for $1.99 per can. But, I have a question: Is coconut cream the same consistency as coconut butter? I have Artisan coconut butter, but it's too grainy to mix into water to make a coconut milk. And TT says that their coconut cream is also called coconut butter.

  6. TT's coconut butter is much smoother and higher quality than Artisana, so it works just fine. :)

  9. I've used TT's coconut cream before. I was never able to get it to mix well with water to make a coconut milk that I satisfied with. Is it different than their butter? I make my own coconut milk from coconut flakes. When it comes to making ice cream I like something thicker like canned coconut milk. Any thoughts?

  11. I have clicked on the link a few times and I can't find any coconut butter, only coconut oil. Am I missing something?

  15. Oh wait. To make it non-grainy you're supposed to use dried coconut and water. Sorry! I don't mind the grainy stuff because any time I use coconut milk, it's in a recipe that's run through the blender so it all gets nice and smooth.

  16. I do need to say that the milk does have a bit of grain in it. I had never noticed because I use it in recipes that require a blender so I never noticed the grainy-ness. Just thought I'd clear that up. :)

  17. Another reason to skip the canned stuff is that most contain guar gum. I'm dairy-free right now and started doing coconut milk in my smoothies. I couldn't figure out why my stomach hurt so bad every time I was drinking them when I used the same ingredients as always (except for the coconut milk). I can tolerate coconut oil and plain coconut, so I couldn't figure out why I was reacting to the coconut milk. I did a little research, and come to find out, guar gum is a big problem for alot of people!

  18. I buy coconut milk in the box. It's about $2.50 for a half gallon.

  19. So excited because they are doing their buy one get one free today! Plus a 10% off coupon so I got two quarts for $34 and that's including shipping! Can't wait to try it.

  20. Coconut milk in the box as 1/2 and gallon sizes are worse than canned. The have sugar and other additives in there. They're thinner than canned milk. In your case you'd be saving money by buying canned milk and diluting it with water. That is basically what box CM is.

  21. Could you use this mixed with water to make kefir/yogurt as well or will it not work as well?
